Moodle Learning Management System


Originally created by Martin Dougiamas to help educators create online courses with a focus on interaction and collaborative construction of content, Moodle is continually evolving.

Moodle (abbreviation for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is a free source e-learning software platform, also known as a Course Management System,
Learning Management System, or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). As of October 2010 it had a user base of 49,952 registered and verified sites, serving 37
million users in 3.7 million courses.

Moodle is open source and so is free to use. It is widely used by universities, schools, companies and independent teachers, educators willing to to create quality
online courses. Important features of Moodle are: Online calendar, assignment submission, moodle instant messages, discussion forum, grading, files download, wiki, online quiz and online news and announcement.


Moodle support plug-ins for specific functionality like activities (word game/ math game), question types, content filter. Also, new modules can be added to Moodle using PHP. Moodle includes the TCPDF library by default that allows the generation of PDF documents from pages.
Deployment of Moodle requires technical proficiency. Free Moodle hosting providers allow create Moodle-based online classes without its server knowledge or installation and paid providers may provide more flexibility in customization and content-development.
You can run Moodle on any system that supports PHP without modification. Moodle's interoperability features include: authentication, enrollment, quizzes and quiz questions, resources, integration with other CMS, syndication.
